Discover how Edgeworth Wastewater Treatment Works replaced traditional fixed-percentage Return Activated Sludge pumping with a dynamic, blanket-based control strategy. Conventional flow pacing can accelerate pump wear, waste energy during low flows and increase solids washout risks during high-flow events. The new system combines real-time secondary clarifier sludge blanket depth analysers with smoothed inflow data, dynamic lookup tables and PID feedback loops to automatically govern pump speeds. Results show improved clarifier capacity utilisation in dry weather, reduced compliance risks during wet weather and significant reductions in daily RAS flow and pumping energy. Attendees will see how instrumentation can transform legacy control.
