Investigate the cause of accelerated reverse osmosis membrane degradation at the Hawker Water Treatment Plant in South Australia. Premature membrane replacement and rising operating costs prompted detailed laboratory analysis of a fouled membrane. Although organic fouling was initially suspected, microscopy and chemical testing identified inorganic scaling involving calcium, magnesium, sulphate and silica. Cross-flow testing then examined site operating conditions and antiscalant dosing, indicating that the antiscalant may have contributed to scaling behaviour. Cleaning trials found acidic solutions most effective at removing deposits and restoring performance. Attendees will gain practical strategies to extend membrane life and reduce costs and improve reliability.
